Choosing the Right Pixel Pitch for Your LED Wall

P1.9 or P4? The single most misunderstood number in LED procurement — and a simple viewing-distance formula that gets it right every time.

Why pixel pitch decides everything

Pixel pitch is the distance in millimetres between the centre of one LED pixel and the next. A P2.5 display has 2.5mm between pixels; a P10 has 10mm. That single number drives resolution, viewing distance, cost, and — if you get it wrong — whether your investment looks sharp or pixellated.

The most common mistake we see in Chennai installations is over-specifying. A client buys a P1.5 wall for a lobby where nobody stands closer than four metres, and pays roughly three times what a P2.9 would have cost for a difference no viewer can perceive.

The 10x rule of thumb

The practical starting point: minimum comfortable viewing distance in metres ≈ pixel pitch in millimetres. A P3 screen looks clean from about 3 metres. A P6 needs 6 metres. Multiply by three for the optimum viewing distance where the image feels effortless.

  • Retail window & lobby (1–3 m): P1.5 – P2.5
  • Conference room & control room (2–4 m): P1.5 – P2.5 or COB
  • Mall atrium & showroom (4–8 m): P2.9 – P4
  • Building façade & road-facing (8–20 m): P5 – P8
  • Highway & stadium (20 m+): P8 – P16

Where budget is better spent

Once pitch is correct for the distance, extra budget delivers more visible return in brightness, refresh rate, and cabinet quality than in tighter pitch. A 3,840Hz refresh rate matters enormously if the screen will ever appear on camera — below that, video recordings show scan lines.

Specify pitch for the closest realistic viewer, not the closest possible viewer. The difference is often 40% of the project budget.

A quick sanity check before you sign

Ask your supplier for the native resolution of the finished wall, not just the pitch. A 4m × 2.25m P2.5 wall gives you 1600 × 900 — slightly under Full HD. If your content is produced in 1920 × 1080, you will be downscaling every frame. Getting this alignment right at quote stage saves reworking your entire content library later.
