Planning an Outdoor LED Installation in India: A Practical Checklist

Permits, power, heat, monsoon, and structure. The site realities that decide whether an outdoor LED project runs smoothly or stalls for months.

Permissions come first, not last

Outdoor advertising displays in most Indian municipal areas require local corporation approval, and in some locations traffic police clearance for road-facing screens. Structural stability certification from a licensed engineer is typically mandatory for any elevated installation. Start this process before hardware is ordered — approval timelines routinely exceed manufacturing lead times.

Power planning that survives Indian conditions

  • Size supply for peak white-screen draw, not average consumption — the gap is often 3×
  • Provide stable, earthed three-phase supply with surge protection at the panel
  • Plan for voltage fluctuation with a servo stabiliser on the LED circuit
  • Include UPS backup for control hardware, even where the screen itself is unbacked
  • Common cathode LED can cut running draw by roughly 30% — significant at 24/7 operation

Heat and monsoon

An IP65 rating covers water ingress from the front and rear faces, but cable entry points are where installations actually fail. Insist on gland-sealed entries and a drip loop on every cable. For Chennai and coastal sites, specify corrosion-resistant cabinets — magnesium or cast aluminium — and check that the powder coating carries a salt-spray rating.

Nine out of ten outdoor LED failures we are called to repair are water at a cable gland or heat at an under-ventilated power supply. Neither is a screen fault.

Structure and access

Decide the maintenance strategy before the frame is fabricated. Front-maintenance cabinets need no rear walkway and suit wall-hung installations. Rear-maintenance designs need 800mm of service space behind the screen. Choosing rear maintenance and then discovering there is no room behind the wall is an expensive mid-project discovery.

Content and commissioning

Budget for a proper commissioning day: point-by-point brightness and colour calibration across the full wall, brightness scheduling tied to ambient light, and a content test at native resolution. A wall that has never been calibrated will show visible module-to-module colour banding within its first year.
